Past a certain age, people are expected to have achieved most of what they have set as goals for themselves. This usually means having the job that they prepared for in school, perhaps in a university or a local college, or managing their own companies, with other people working for them as employees. As adults, they are supposed to have already established themselves firmly in their chosen field. However, for most people anywhere around the world, this can only be true in an ideal world. The reality most of us face is that we are stuck in an employment that we never prepared for nor actually wanted in the first place. There are people who go to work daily for the last several years, not expecting to have any radical change at the end of the day, and knowing that they will be going back to the same home they left in the morning. They realize fully well that they won’t have the chance to be anywhere other than where they began earlier in the day. But all things being equal, all should have an opportunity to improve their lot and pull themselves out of the seemingly futureless spot they find themselves in today. One way to do this is to have some adult education classes that will give them new skills and abilities they could use. As adults with a wider perspective in life and willingness to learn more, they could be trained for more productive work outside of what they have been used to.

There are plenty of adult education courses available either online or in a local learning institution close to you and there would be one that will fit your needs. Some of these courses have been designed for complete beginners who have no previous training or education in that particular field while some would require prior preparation. You can inquire from the institution which course doesn’t have any entry requirements and which ones have such requirements. The important prerequisite however, is that you are willing to learn and go through the modules without reservations.

Many adults seem quite content with what they have at present but there will be those who are beginning to get restless and look for satisfaction and fulfillment in what they are doing. These are the people who would most likely benefit from adult education courses. Such courses can provide the much needed impetus that could propel their careers and allow them to get more job satisfaction or if they want, a new job at a different location or company. Courses are meant to endow you with knowledge and productive skills that could let you qualify for a promotion and thus, a salary increase as well. They will make you more marketable in your field or if you took new courses outside of your old expertise, turn you into a candidate for employment in a new field.

If you are contemplating a move to change the direction of your life, your question will be about the things you need to learn and where to learn. You will certainly need someone to advice you on what your next steps should be. You will have to find out what new career is waiting for you and what skills you need to have in order to qualify for it. You need to know which adult education courses to take and in what learning institution to enroll. You will also have to decide if you will take online courses or go into an actual school.

Whatever manner you finally decide, always bear in mind that adult education courses are there so you can go back to educating yourself in such a way that you needs and circumstances as an adult are considered. You can take full time or part time courses that will fit your schedule and work around your current activities so they enhance your chances of a better life rather than disrupt you and jeopardize your chances.

Does the teaching of adult learners require different assumptions and techniques than the teaching of children and pre-adult adolescents?

For centuries, the question was rarely considered, as what could be called the “pedagogical” model of education was universally applied. Pedagogy is what we now call teacher-centered learning. The teacher is the expert who by virtue of his or her superior knowledge and experience over the student determines not only the content of what is to be taught, but how it is taught as well. Teaching methodology is largely a one-way transfer of learning from expert to novice, most often in the form of lectures and reading assignments.

In the 1960′s American educator, Malcolm Knowles popularized a new approach called andragogy, which he described in one of his later books, The Modern Practice of Adult Education, as the art and science of teaching adults. Since then, the term is used to describe learner-centered education at all ages.

The passage from childhood to adulthood is marked by increasing degrees of independence and responsibility for decision making about one’s own life. Knowles believed adults would learn better were they more involved in the decisions about their own learning.

Knowles based his model on six assumptions:

Adults have a “need to know.” They must have a rationale for why they need to learn a body of content.

Adults come to the educational setting with more relevant experience.

Adults have a need to be involved in the decisions about their own learning.

Adults learn best when they see a direct relevance of the learning to their own lives.

Adults are better at learning content that is oriented towards solving problems.

Adults respond better to intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic motivation.

Today there is a growing belief that many of these assumptions apply equally to the education of children. If you search the Internet for information on andragogy and the whole idea of adult education, you will find some who believe Knowles himself later came to believe the same principles should be applied to childhood education in certain situations.

For professionals involved in the education of adults in post-graduate and industrial settings, one could argue the most challenging of these principles are rationale and relevance.

Rationale

There are really three issues here: what is to be learned; how it will be learned; and why it is important. Spelling out the what and the how is not that difficult, but the why presents the challenge. An adult who has decided to pursue a Masters in Business Administration with a major in International Business finds himself or herself in an accounting class. Why?

The value in understanding this principle of adult education is recognizing the need to address the question, rather than assuming the student has no need to know. Under a pedagogical model, there may be valid reasons for learning something, but the instructor sees no reason to share them with the students.

Relevance

If adults have an immediate need to know something, they are more motivated to learn it. If you are teaching a class on appraisal techniques to a group of managers who are about to begin the process of appraising employees for the first time, they will be more motivated to learn. There is no denying the power of the principle of immediacy. However, being aware of the principle of relevance enables an instructor to focus on future applications rather than strictly immediate needs.

Have you found your spouse looking at porn online, or do you have a feeling they look at porn online? Are you starting to think your spouse may have an addiction to porn? If you have caught your spouse looking at online pornography, you may feel hurt, shocked, betrayed, and more. However, before you get too upset, you should determine if it is really addiction or just curiosity. Here are some tips and pointers to help you determine just that.

How Much Time is Your Spouse Spending on the Computer?

If your spouse never spends much time on the computer and you only caught them looking at porn once or twice, the chances are it’s just a case of curiosity that your spouse is experiencing. This is perfectly normal, as many people are curious and look at porn once in a while. However, if your spouse is spending a lot of time on the computer and you notice that they want to be on the computer when they are alone, they may have an addiction to porn.

Many people who are addicted to porn find that they want to be online all the time looking at it. They get online when they are alone, or after everyone else in the house is sleeping. They may also have the urge to pull up porn on the computer at work. Men or women who want to be on the computer all the time looking at porn most likely have some sort of addiction.

Is Your Spouse Irritable, Cranky, or Even Angry When You Mention Porn?

If you ask your spouse about the porn in an innocent way, such as, “I noticed you looking at porn on the computer earlier,” does your spouse get upset? Do they act guilty or angry that you know about them looking at porn? Typically, at first a spouse should act unsure because they aren’t sure how you’re going to take the fact that they were looking at porn. However, if your spouse instead becomes very irritable, this may indicate an addiction to porn.

Does Your Spouse Isolate Himself or Herself and Lose Track of Time on the Computer?

People who have an addiction do not want others to know. Therefore, they will try to hide the condition from you by hiding their porn. If you know your spouse is losing track of time on the computer and hiding their porn, you should be concerned. There is a difference between being addicted to porn and simply having the desire to look once in a while.

Porn addiction, just like any other addiction, is frustrating and difficult for your spouse and you. The first thing you need is for your spouse to admit that he or she is addicted to porn. Then, together the two of you can seek help for the issue and work together to overcome the porn addiction. Using the signs above, determine if your spouse is addicted to porn or if it is just a natural curiosity. Good luck!

As most of you will realize there is a great deal of porn floating around the internet these days. You can get your hands on whatever you may wish, from pictures to films to amateur videos uploaded for the world to see. You do not even need to pay for it now, there are plenty of free hardcore sites who’s idea of a filter is to ask the date before you enter.

With porn so easy to come by it is little surprise that addictions are on the increase and no wonder how it is fueled. If you find yourself suffering from addiction, you are tempted 24 hours a day, every day simply by access to the net.

Why not just stop searching for it?

The problem is, many people may want to stop but find it hard, that is after all the definition of an addiction. There are many men who want to stop, their addiction is having negative effects on their lives. It is a lot harder than you may think. These days it is popularly accepted within psychiatric circles that porn addiction is indeed a mental disorder, one that needs treatment in order to fix.

Can you tell if you are a porn addict?

Somebody suffering from porn addiction will be unable to control how much time they find themselves looking at porn, even when it begins to have negative effects in their life. Much like other addictions there are some tell tale signs.

Common signs include:

- Unable to resist looking at porn.

- More than your average excitement before you look at porn.

- High amounts of pleasure as a result of porn, more like you needed it rather than just simply wanted it.

You can expect five of the following signs:

- Overly preoccupied with porn.

- Watching more than is healthy.

- You try to slow the amount of time you find yourself viewing porn but fail.

- The amount of time you spend online is such it disrupts day to day life.

- You find your job, school, social or home life seriously disrupted by viewing porn.

- You overlook prior engagements due to watching porn.

- You realize that you have a problem but can simply do nothing about it.

- You find it takes more and more porn to reach the same levels of pleasure you did before.

- If you are unable to watch porn for whatever reason, you become increasingly aggravated.

Is there a way to stop access to porn on your PC?

If you feel your loved one may be suffering from a porn addiction it is best to approach them and attempt to discuss it. If the internet is their main source of pornography there is a lot you can do. Remove temptation. You do not need to completely remove the computer and internet connection from your house.

If your partner or family member has admitted to a problem and wants help you can come to the agreement to limit their access. You can easily shut out porn sites by activating a porn blocking internet filter. One such effective filter can be found at BestPornFilter.com, the recommended review site on porn filters. This is a quick and simple solution to take you on your first step to overcoming your problem, or helping somebody else overcome theirs.

Lots of people support porn, they know from inside that porn does harm in their lives, but they don’t oppose porn and they don’t like the people who oppose porn. Why? Why do they support porn?

Because porn gives something to them. Porn satisfies them, Porn relieves them, Porn gives happiness to them. So naturally they support porn, they need the happiness porn gives, for this happiness, they are ready to suffer, whatever damage porn make in their lives, they watch porn again and again.

Porn is the greatest need for them, why?

The answer lies in lot of factors; I discuss the main things here.

Repressed emotions.

Stress in daily life.

Unfulfilled need for affection.

Pessimism and lack of hope

Repressed emotions

To experience life properly, one needs tremendous freedom, with freedom one enjoys, and all of us want to enjoy, nobody wants sorrow.

But in social living, one has to live in certain patterns, and there is no escape from it. In childhood, one has to go to school, as you and I know, many children hate it. In adulthood, one has to go to a job, most adults hate their jobs.

Society compels us to live in certain patterns. We can’t blame society for that, because this is necessary for society to function well (until we figure out a better system). We have to repress ourselves to follow these patterns. Daily we do this. Repression, I am not talking about all people, there are few people who enjoy their work, truly enjoyed their school days etc, but for many, going to work in the morning is not amazingly thrilling, many hate it, they hate it for lot of reasons, but they have to go to work, they do things they don’t like, they repress.

These repressed feelings create tension inside which we may not aware consciously, one has to release this accumulated tension to be free and easy. Many people don’t know the good ways to release it; they haven’t developed necessary skills to release these tensions. To release these tensions, they need a way.

There porn becomes friend. Porn gives great help to release the tension by letting them feel the ‘feel good chemicals’ which is produced in the body while watching porn. Or the sensations female bodies produce in their heads. They find what they needs. Release.

This repressed emotion is the main reason behind bizarre rough porn. The people who repress more tend to like rough and bizarre porn. Seeing someone suffer makes them happy, this is because of the suffering they carry themselves. They want to see more people in suffering which let them feel good of themselves.

Stress in Daily life

As I told earlier, a few enjoy their job, most are compelled. Compelled for for actions in their lives. Compulsion creates stress, and stress creates anger and negative thoughts. Anger and negative thoughts affects their relationship to another. Damages in relationships makes one isolated, isolation blocks the ways of constructive stress releases.

So one moves to destructive ways to release stress. They go to things like drugs and porn.

Usually porn addicts get stressed more because of their underdeveloped social skills to relate with others, relating with others and being in compassion is essential for anybody to effectively release the stress, so lack of social skills multiplies one’s stress levels.

To relieve stress, one is going back to porn.

Unfulfilled need for affection

Mostly porn addicts are the kind of people who don’t posses great skills to attract and keep a girlfriend of their choice and achieve their affection and love. Girls like heroes. Many of us are not heroes. So we don’t get what we needs, affection. This lack of affections creates tension and sorrow.

Here also we depend on porn.

Pessimism and lack of hope

Did you observe pessimists? Observe… if you are a pessimist, then it’s easy. You can observe yourself. Pessimists carry great stress in themselves, because of their lack of trust to anybody or anything; they have to take care of everything themselves. Lot of things in head. Always being in great stress.

Pessimists carry lot more stress in themselves than average man. To release this stress, most depend on porn.

These are the main reasons which make porn fascinating. Understanding the deep reasons behind the need of porn help you to quit porn more effectively.

For some men this might be a confronting question, but for someone who knows they have a porn addiction, it is possibly one of the most confronting questions they could encounter. Once we have explored more about porn addictions the reasons for this may become clearer.

So, do you have an addiction to porn?

Firstly, let’s understand what we are talking about. The term ‘porn’ itself probably doesn’t need much clarification. However, the term ‘addiction’ is something that is often used very freely in our society to define a broad range of behaviours.

There are an infinite number of different ways that addiction has been defined, but one of the most generic and simplest is Wikipedia’s definition of it as “a continued involvement with a substance or activity despite the negative consequences associated with it”.

From this definition it is clear that the term ‘addiction’ could be applied to any number of different challenges. Alcohol and drug addictions are commonly understood issues in our society. Other addictions that counsellors might regularly encounter include sex addictions, gaming addictions, TV addictions, etc. There is a debate within the helping professional about whether porn addictions actually exist, and whether they should be classed in the same was as other ‘addictions’.

So while someone may be addicted to something like porn or gaming, it does not suggest that the behaviour or the activity itself is problematic or an ‘issue’. Issues and problems relating to addiction generally only apply when the behaviour is ongoing and continues, despite impacting negatively on other areas of one’s life or the life of those around you.

Porn itself often carries a negative stigma. This may originate from a family or religious value system. As a result, some people may find that they have a number of responses or reactions to their behaviour, either during or after having viewed pornography. For someone who has been raised with values that suggests porn is ‘wrong’, there can be a sense of guilt or shame. Other elements of self-judgement can arise too, such as thinking that one may be a ‘bad person’ or ‘feeling worthy-less’ or worthless. For many men accessing porn may be something that they do in secret, either a secret that they keep alone, or possibly one that is shared with a close friend or partner.

So what is the difference between simply watching porn and being addicted to porn?

Perhaps you can ask yourself these questions:

1. Do you access porn on a regular basis? Perhaps more than once per week?

2. Do you notice any anxiety within yourself if you aren’t able to access porn as often as you’d like?

3. Are parts of your life being negatively impacted because you are accessing porn?

4. Are any of the relationships in your life being affected?

5. Do you often intend to do some other activity and then somehow find yourself accessing porn instead?

6. Are you regularly getting less sleep than you should because of porn?

7. When you access porn do you often find yourself spending far more time than you had intended?

8. Have you increased your broadband plan to accommodate your porn needs?

9. Do you often tell yourself you’re going to stop or you’re going to limit the amount of porn you access, but then it doesn’t actually happen?

I’m not going to tell you that because you’ve answered these questions with a ‘yes’ that you definitely have a porn addiction. To do so would simply add to the ‘judgements’ that you’ve possibly already heaped on yourself. However, if some of these questions do apply to you, then perhaps there is something there for you to explore.

Often someone with an addiction will focus all of their efforts on trying to stop the addiction. They will set themselves goals, such as “I’m not going to do it for 7 days”. Sometimes there is even a reward at the end: “if I abstain for 2 weeks I’ll reward myself with a…”. They will often question why they do it, and what it’s caused by. The addiction, and stopping it, can be something that begins to consume their life and their thoughts, and can have a significant impact on how they feel.

From my experience in working with clients, persistent behaviours such as porn addictions, often suggest an absence of something else in their life. While it is important not to completely ignore the addictive behaviour, often the journey towards a better balance in life is through actually focussing on other aspects of one’s life, such as relationships, family of origin issues, and other feelings deep within that are desperate to be explored and heard.

Addictive behaviours are sometimes a way for men to cover up, or hide away, something else in their lives that they don’t feel they are ready to deal with. For some men, they may not be aware of what these other issues are, or even that they exist.

Porn addictions can occur in cycles. There can be a time where one accesses porn very often, almost not being able to stop. And, then there are other times when the feeling is not as strong, or life is interesting and busy enough that one doesn’t even think of porn, or perhaps because there isn’t an opportunity. Because of the cycle of addition men may sometimes commit to seeking help for their addiction, but then when they are feeling less addicted, or less attracted to the porn, they tell themselves they are on the right track and don’t follow through. And then the cycle begins again.

My professional experience and training suggests to me that it is extremely hard for someone to find a ‘solution’ to their addiction, or to let go of their addiction, on their own. Most often it is necessary to engage some help. Because of the nature of porn addictions it can be really hard for many men to seek help from those close to them. They may not want anyone else to know.

By seeking help from a professional who has the experience to help you and is also bound by a confidentiality framework, it is possible to find a way forward in a safe and supportive way. It is important to realise that the journey to healing addictions has many ‘ups and downs’. Having a professional who is able to expertly guide you and remain a constant for you during this journey, is invaluable.

So, whether you have a porn addiction or not, if you feel that porn is an issue in your life, try to seek some support and help from a qualified professional.

It’s good to talk.

Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, is a common medical treatment that can relieve the symptoms of menopause. It is also sometimes used to lessen aging symptoms in men. Although it can be helpful, hormone therapy also comes with many health risks. For this reason, every person should discuss the decision to use hormone treatment with their doctor.

What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy is a treatment that consists of medication prescribed to women by a family physician. The medication is designed to counteract the effects of menopause. These medications contain female hormones like estrogen and progestin, which is a man-made version of the naturally occurring progesterone. Hormone therapy can alleviate many symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes and vaginal symptoms. Although usually used to treat women, a form of hormone therapy for men is also available to treat low levels of testosterone.

History of the Treatment

Hormone therapy has been around since the 1930′s, when estrogen was used to treat hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. In the 1960′s, doctors found more reasons to use HRT and family physicians began prescribing it more often. Throughout the next ten years, doctors used hormone therapy to treat everything from hot flashes to depression. It was approved by the FDA to treat menopause at first. In the 1980′s it was also approved to treat the loss of bone density. By 2002, it became apparent that hormone therapy can cause serious health problems and the frequency of prescription went down greatly.

Benefits to Hormone Replacement

There are a few benefits to using hormone replacement therapy in the short term. Women seem to gain protection against the loss of bone density, colorectal cancer and heart disease. Studies show that this lowers the chance of fractures and broken bones. The decrease in heart disease occurs when hormone therapy is started at the beginning of menopause. Of course, benefits also include the reduction in menopausal symptoms like mood swings and trouble sleeping as well.

Shortcomings of the Therapy

There are a number of side effects that have decreased the use of hormone therapy medication by family physicians over the past ten years. Taking estrogen medication without progestin increases the risk of uterine cancer. Long term use of hormone therapy is linked to abnormal mammograms, a higher risk of blood clots and an increased chance of certain cancers. For some, the benefits can outweigh the risks of hormone therapy, although family physicians usually recommend it only when menopause symptoms are too difficult to live with.

Hormone replacement therapy has decreased over the past ten years, although it is still an effective treatment for some individuals. HRT can reduce menopausal symptoms and decrease the risk of osteoporosis. Still, the side effects and health risks associated with the process make it necessary to carefully consider the therapy before choosing it for long term treatment.

Weight and appearance now define social and economic opportunities, whereas surname, old school tie and family network used to. Celebrities, movers and shakers and the wealthy are active participants in the wellness revolution today, establishing a beachhead in diet, exercise, vitamins, nutritional supplements and reversing the ageing process. People are actively pursuing healthier lifestyles but don’t have the time for it and there is an upsurge in interest in cosmetic alterations and anti-ageing treatments.

What is wellness? It’s about prevention rather than cure. Curing being the prevail of the medical or the sickness industry. People don’t necessarily choose sickness but can actively choose wellness. The medical industry tends to treat the symptoms, not the underlying problem but very often people have neglected themselves for too long, offering little alternative. Even pharmaceutical companies are more incentivised to spend R & D resources on treating rather than curing ailments, and certainly have little interest in prevention. Because of their economic might they exercise a great deal of influence in the medical fraternity. Health-care funding is a R40 billion+ industry in South Africa alone.

In an increasingly chronic stressful environment, people have less time and look towards “a pill for every ill” solution instead of focusing on the discipline required to establish a sound physical infrastructure. Food, diet and exercise are often neglected. In the USA, 61% of the population are overweight and in ill health. This situation is matched in other developed countries and it is reasonable to assume that a similar picture is emerging in advanced developing nations like ours. The processed and fast food industries have grown exponentially but there is an increasing movement towards healthier lifestyles. This is reflected amongst the wealthier echelons of our population and mirrored by the growth and success of the gym/fitness sector.

Many modern maladies are explained away as a consequence of the ageing process but more and more people will come to realize that stress-related ailments, headaches, body pain, fatigue, arthritis and thousands of other common ailments can be combated by a focus on lifestyle choices. Many existing holistic health practitioners are seen as fringe and also often don’t exploit proven business practices but in the USA, the burgeoning wellness industry represents a turnover of $200 billion pa and some anticipate it will grow to $1 trillion within the next 10 years. Around the world the size of the opportunity is enormous for business minded operators.
